How to Dress You and Your Child for Any Weather Year-round

You wake up in the morning and there are outdoor adventures to be had but the weather has got you wondering what on earth should you wear!! Being dressed for the weather can really make or break your time outdoors so we have compiled some golden rules to help you dress for success.

How to Dress for the Winter Guide

#1 rule: Layering Is Key

When it comes to unpredictable Canadian weather, layering is your best friend. Layering allows you to adjust your outfit throughout the day by giving you the option of adding or removing clothing as needed.

  • Base layer: Start with a moisture-wicking material like wool or synthetic material to keep sweat off your skin. This will help regulate your body temperature. Avoid cotton!

  • Middle layer: This could be a long-sleeve shirt, a wool sweater, or a fleece. The middle layer adds insulation to keep warmth in.

  • Outer layer: This is where your protection from the elements comes in. Something waterproof and windproof is key for the very wet/cold days.

Consider the Temperature (But Also the Wind)

You might think you got this figured out on a day that is only 2 degrees but then with the windchill it is actually -5 degrees. Know and understand what you are getting into!

  • Hot weather: Lightweight, breathable fabrics like linen, cotton, and moisture-wicking synthetics are ideal. Long sleeve UV shirts are great as well if you are sensitive to the sun. A wide-brimmed hat can help protect your head and neck from the sun, while sunglasses will keep your eyes safe.

  • Cold weather: Choose clothing made of insulating materials like wool, fleece, or down for warmth. Remember to keep skin covered to prevent wind burn and/or frost bite. Keep in mind your hands, feet, ears and nose are always the first to get cold.

Pack Extras of Everything!

It is best to be prepared for the unexpected. In the bottom of your backpack or in a separate bag make sure to bring the following:

  • A couple extra pairs of socks

  • A hat, neck warmer, and double-layered mittens

  • HOT PAWS for extra warmth on hands and feet

  • For wet conditions, use plastic bags inside boots for added dryness

  • Extra base layer and warm layer, pants and underwear

  • For sunny days: Don’t forget sunscreen and lip balm with SPF to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, even in the winter.

Listen to Your Body to Know How to Dress

Ultimately, the best advice is to listen to how your body feels. No two people are exactly alike so dressing might look different for everyone. If you’re too hot or too cold, you’ll likely be distracted, uncomfortable, and less focused on what you need to do.

No matter what the weather throws at you, the key to staying comfortable is choosing the right fabrics, knowing how to layer, and being prepared for surprises. Stay versatile, stay informed, and don’t be afraid to experiment with outfits to see what works best for you. The weather can be unpredictable, but your ability to dress for it doesn’t have to be!
